What does cross your mind when hear about Bandung? Most of you will
answer culinary, shopping in Factory Outlet, campus or tourism object
that cross over around Bandung. How about the culture, what do you know
about traditional culture of West Java? Maybe you already knew it but
have you seen or done it directly? If you want to know more about West
Java culture, Saung Angklung Udjo is the best place for you.
Saung Angklung Udjo located in Padasuka Street, Bandung; this is West
Java cultural workshop, which built by Udjo Ngalagena in 1966 and his
heirs continue it. This Saung placed on Bandung countryside with
harmonious and breezy of traditional ambience. This place is tourist
center for West Java arts, especially Angklung. Angklung is West Java
traditional music instrument that made from Bamboo. In this workshop,
you can watch arts performance, Angklung made and shop traditional
souvenir. Everyday, Saung Angklung Udjo performs arts show, which held
for 1.5-2 hours. You are wrong if thinking this arts performance will be
too long or boring.
Art performance made briefly, intense, entertaining and interactive. The
show is using bilingual, who is Bahasa and English, the anchor also uses
some Sudanese to introduce to visitors. Before the show, visitors get
synopsis that made in 3 languages, which is Bahasa, English and Holland
so you won’t miss while watching it. This show is using bilingual
because their visitors are not only from West Java but also from other
cities and countries. The artists are very fluent in explaining each
show so it can run attractively.
Performance of Saung Angklung Udjo consists of Wayang Golek
demonstration, Helaran, traditional dances such as Merak and Mask Dance,
Calung, Arumba, Angklung Pak Daeng, Playing Angklung together, Angklung
Orkestra, Angklung Jaipong and Dancing together. This show packed
differently because the artists ask visitors to participate in the show
by playing Angklung together. Visitors learn how to play Angklung easily
and quickly so Angklung seems fun to play. Especially there are children
among the artists that cheer the ambience because they look fun and
excited.
In closing show, the artists asks the visitors again to dance and do
traditional games with them while musicians from Saung Angklung Udjo
play the music. The musicians can play any kind of music such as
traditional, pop, dangdut even jazz music with traditional music
instrument from West Java. When visitors play Angklung, each person
plays one Angklung to give one tone. But in this performance, they show
their greatness by showing more difficult Angklung show. All Angklung
players are using up to 10 Angklungs per person so they can give melodic
and harmonious. Saung Angklung Udjo has target to break their own record
in Shanghai, Cina by performing Angklung with 12.500 people. Hopefully
this event can be successful and get support from related parties.
Saung Angklung Udjo provides some tour packages for groups such as from
schools, offices, foundations, families or individual visitor. For group
visitors, it would be better if you make reservation. It also would be

information about them. With the increasing of interest and enthusiastic
from people for Saung Angklung Udjo, it should consider about extend
their area, especially for parking lot for visitors. It won’t be
complete if you come to Bandung without come to Saung Angklung Udjo
